Currents of TransAtlantic Relics
el agua alcanza por debajo de todo / water reaches below everything
From Ireland to Puerto Rico, from France to Ireland, from Ireland to the east coast of Turtle Island: Montréal, NYC, The Bronx. My mothers side of the family.
The Atlantic Ocean; known by the Tuscarora as Kahnawáʼkye and by the Mohawk as Kaniatarowanenneh, (meaning "big waterway"), le fleuve Saint-Laurent / St Lawrence River; known by the Lenape peoples as Mahicantuck, which means "the river that flows two ways, the Hudson River; known by the Siwanoy peoples as Aquehung or “River of High Bluffs,” The Bronx River.
And a college paper on the Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw Nation that foreshadowed a later move to the west coast. A great-great grandfather who left Montréal to work in San Francisco, waving hello across the echoes.

Merián Soto, “Energetic Modes”
I was looking for a way to dance my own dance, not only the steps I had been taught but something that spoke of my own experience as a Puerto Rican woman in NYC. To achieve this, I needed to trick myself out of patterns. I also wanted to train myself to dance in ways that I envisioned. Pepón [Osorio – her husband, visual artist and MacArthur Fellow]'s mentor, Klemente Soto Beles had told me that "the dance of the future is levitation" and it startled me into trying to figure out if that was at all possible for me. I realized that I probably wouldn't levitate but I could dance energy, I could dance the energetic body. Aura mode particularly expands the body in this way. (Soto email 19 Sept 2012).

aLIVE series
aLIVE PERFORMANCE SERIES is a coming-together of artists who need to show work “right now.” aLIVE champions the creative commons ~ performances are eclectic, changeable, and sometimes co-curated with other artists. I began the series in February 2015, and wanted to play with ideas of live performance and being alive in the coldest month of the year - still here, still making work, and ready to connect with others who want to be part of a creative gathering. After 10 events in Montréal, the last aLIVE performance was Aug 2017.
